My Business Info Keeps Changing on Google! What Do I Do?
As digital marketers, we often tell local business owners how having an optimized Google Business Profile (fka Google My Business) is essential. However, this is not a “set it and forget it” type of task. Keeping your Google Business Profile optimized is something that requires some time and attention on a regular basis. Ideally, you’d want to spend some time each week dedicated to it.
A common problem that business owners and digital marketers sometimes come across is that some information on your business’s Google profile keeps changing to incorrect information. Just do a quick search on Google Business Profile forums and you’ll see people asking about how to deal with this issue.
As an agency, we’ve had to deal with this issue recently. The phone number for one of our clients kept changing. What was happening is that a source that Google trusted more than the verified owner had the incorrect number. We spent a good amount of time researching where the change was coming from before we found the source.
Recently, Joy Hawkins of Sterling Sky and the Local Search Forum posted a great method for checking to see what apps and sites have access to change your listing via the API for Google Business Profile. That’s a very good way of seeing what sites may be altering your information in Google.
You can see what apps currently have access to change your account in Google. Just sign in to your Google account.
Look for things listed under the third-party apps section that say they have access to manage business listings. Review each site/app and click “Remove Access”.
In the post on the Local Search Forum, Joy shared an example of a business who went from # 1 to #31 overnight because he connected his Google Business Profile listing to Yext and didn’t realize he entered a different primary category into the Yext data. Doing that trickled down from Yext and it updated his Google Business Profile listing.
